Four Concepts for Thinking About art in the Digital Age: Liminal, Systemic, Invagination, and Ectopia

The digital environment presents us with new ways of relating to art content. Our way of seeing and approaching works, exhibitions, and museums has changed; so has access to information with a single click or a scroll, through the flat surface of our device screens.

The programme Art en pantalla (I, II) attempts to approach all these issues through the diverse perspectives of the guests, who also share the readings that complement their presentations. We have featured presentations by: Eugenia Tenenbaum, Sara Rubayo, Jorge Carrión, Miguel Ángel Cajigal Vera (El Barroquista), Marisol Salanova, Bernardo Pajares and Juanra Sanz (Arte compacto), Miguel Ángel Hernández, Mayte Gómez Molina, Lorena Pérez-Jácome and Juan Martín Prada, who will close the programme. It is, therefore, a program to promote reading for all audiences, which addresses the dissemination of the history of creation from multiple perspectives, in addition to addressing how art is disseminated on social media and other digital platforms.

We will conclude this series, which has spanned two years at Es Baluard Museum, with the lecture “Four Concepts for Thinking About art in the Digital Age: Liminal, Systemic, Invagination, and Ectopia” by Juan Martín Prada. His talk will be structured around four concepts (liminal, systemic, invagination, and ectopia) that can help us identify some of the main strategies of contemporary art, as well as inform our consideration of its possible future evolution within the complex framework of digital culture. Martín Prada will recommend, among other essential books, The Damned of the Screen by Hito Steyerl, published by Caja Negra in 2014.

Juan Martín Prada is professor at the University of Cádiz, where he directs the research group “Contemporary Aesthetic Theories.” He is the author of numerous articles and essays on visual studies, aesthetics, and contemporary art theory, including La apropiación posmoderna. Arte, práctica apropiacionista y Teoría de la posmodernidad (2001), Prácticas artísticas e Internet en la época de las redes sociales (2012), El ver y las imágenes en el tiempo de Internet (2018), or Teoría del arte y cultura digital (2023).
