From Es Baluard Museu we propose to celebrate 2023 International Museum Day with “Letter of Marque”, a performance by Daniel García Andújar, a project that has the complicity and voice of Joana Gomila in the musical composition. “Letter of Marque” is also the title of the exhibition that can be seen in itinerance until May 28 at the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Madrid, and that was inaugurated in Es Baluard Museu in September last year.
The action “Letter of Marque” is, in the artist’s own words, “a story of disaffections and betrayals; of expulsions, raids, migrations, exiles, exodus and banishment; of Greeks, Romans, Carthaginians, Phoenicians, Byzantines and Iberians; of muladís, Moriscos, Berbers, Mozarabs, Ottomans, Arabs, Mudejars, converts, Jews, Christians, Muslims and heretics; returnees, xuetes, pied-noirs, harkis or francaoui; Republican or National; poor and rich; corsairs, traffickers, smugglers and pirates. The story of thousands of men, women, and children, from virtually every culture, civilization, and religious background, who were kidnapped, forced, shipped to unknown lands, or sold into slavery. In memory of all of them, and especially Deseado Mercadal”. Mercadal (Maó, 1911-2000) was a journalist, politician and musician admitted to Kendza’s work fields, which later resided in Algiers. His figure is approached especially by García Andújar in this project.
