¿PÚBLICO? ¿QUÉ PÚBLICO?

The Nit de l'Art, one of the artistic and cultural events featured in the Balearic Islands is also, to a large part of the population, their annual date with the world of art. Huge crowds gather for an evening in the city center of Palma to visit the exhibitions presented in art centers and galleries. The occasion is also carried out by alternative spaces and artists, bringind their proposals independently to the streets and squares.
The Nit de l'Art is then a celebration of the Majorcan art scene and a good opportunity to see international draft proposals, a time when one can question what the relationship between the public and contemporary art. It is quite evident that there is a striking gap between the art being made today, and the vast majority of the population, unaccustomed to visit museums and galleries and often influenced by the conviction that contemporary art is a set of mere occurrences more or less successful.
As noted by Pierre Bourdieu in The Love of Art (1966), we can not speak of one general public but of a variety of audiences and, therefore, we need to identify the needs of the public and find out how we can bring contemporary art to this heterogeneous group of people.
In order to create a forum for dialogue on contemporary art reception, the meeting entitled ”Public? What public?” aims to bring together a group of curators from the international art scene in the day before the Nit de l' Art, to discuss the challenges that must be confronted to reinforce interest in contemporary art among the general public.
The event will feature speeches from the following speakers:
- Nekane Aramburu, Es Baluard's director.
- Cécile Bourne-Farrell (independent curator, France).
- Daniela Labra (independent curator, Brasil).
- Marina Dacci (director of the Collezione Maramotti, Italy).
- Imma Prieto (independent curator, Spain).
Presented and coordinated by Fernando Gómez de la Cuesta and Pau Waelder (independent curators).
