The reason for this cycle
With the title “Conflictes”, Taula associació d’educadores culturals de Mallorca, launched in 2018 a cycle of thought around mediation and artistic education. The second edition arrived in 2022 with the name “Cossos al carrer”. With the aim of giving continuity to these seminars, Es Baluard Museu i Taula associació d’educadores culturals de Mallorca present the third edition under the title “Purpurina i confeti”.
Aware of the importance of mediation and education in contemporary arts, the current conferences aims to highlight the figure of the educator and, above all, to make visible the need and transversality of this work.
We propose a cycle that reflects on the most translocal and multidisciplinary artistic education. Meetings to make people think about the meaning, importance and possibilities of artistic mediation today, and that put the concepts of mediation and education in conflict.
The laboratory
The diversity of work and contents in the field that is called artistic mediation, artistic or cultural education or artistic pedagogical practice… (also a diversity of denominations), makes it difficult to establish a common ethical, political, and economic framework, and this lack results in a precariousness of professionals who create symbolic content, critical thinking and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship with the community.
We know or intuit the great diversity of ways of doing things and needs of the sector depending on whether we work for art centres, museums, cultural, social, educational or community centres. If this diversity is conveyed through mutual knowledge and contradictions and conflicts are not hidden, on the contrary, it can become a great asset for the community of mediation and/or artistic education in the Balearic Islands. The power of artistic education, or trough art, as a critical and transformative practice is now more necessary than ever. Activating critical reflection and showing the contradictions in institutions is urgent, as well as moving towards the same direction and establishing common bases on what is happening, what we want, what we need in order to demand from institutions responsible educational practices that can be articulate with the rest of artistic practices as equals.
The profession requires highly trained people who generate knowledge, together with the participants, towards the institution. It is no longer admissible for people who are dedicated to education in institutions to be under the agreement of “cultural monitors.” At the Laboratory we want to generate a meeting space for this community, which is a space for self-reflection to, using contemporary artistic tools, rethink what mediation, critical pedagogy, artistic education… are in a common way, and thus make it possible to reach to a possible consensus towards a common professional ethic and economic foundations.

Taula. Associació d’educadores culturals de Mallorca
TAULA. Associació d’educadores culturals de Mallorca was established in 2017 with the aim of being a meeting place for a heterogeneous group of professionals -mainly museum educators and mediators, freelancers, collectives, artists, curators, managers and researchers- who, from different pedagogical realities, allow us to question and reflect about the importance of education and artistic mediation today. It is considered a demanding, heterogeneous, stable and open work group to value the figure of the educator. TAULA is a member of Almazuela. Federación Española de Asociaciones de Educación y Mediación en Cultura, Museos y Patrimonio.
