Toni Catany dealt with different genres throughout his career: landscape, nude, still life and portrait. From 1994 on, he developed a whole series of photographs with the face as their central theme. Perfil, a large-format photograph taken in 1997, is a close-up of a masculine face which contrasts with a plain red background. As was customary through his compositions, he controlled nuances and artificial and human textures, achieving an authentic play on shadows, an aspect he was an absolute master of and which characterises the work of this Mallorcan photographer.

For his portraits, Catany usually had recourse to dancers, anonymous figures or people he met on his travels whom he felt attracted to. Perfil is one of the first digital photographs he took, the result of which he achieved thanks to giclée edition, a technique which consists of the digital reproduction of a digitalized image sent from a computer to an inkjet printer, enabling him to achieve a better result as regards colour. In Spain this technique was not very well-known, and Catany had the opportunity to learn it in Venezuela during an exhibition. Since then he used the digital method, thanks to which he obtained a range of colours it would be impossible to attain with analogue photography.

Toni Catany
Llucmajor, Mallorca, 1942 - Barcelona, 2013

In 1963, Catany settled in Barcelona, city that turned into his habitual residence. Self-taught, he began to work as a freelance artist in 1966 creating travel features, a task he dedicated himself to for a brief time before finally turning to artistic photography. In 1976, Catany began to work on portraits, nudes, still lifes and landscapes, working in the traditional calotype technique and later on, with transported Polaroids, always on the basis of subjectivity and his experiences. National and international recognition arrived in 1979 with series of still lifes in colour and in black and white.

He published numerous books and catalogues, such as Natures Mortes, with which won the award for the best Photographic Book (Llibre Fotogràfic) at the Primavera Fotogràfica de Catalunya festival (1988). His work has been displayed at Palau Solleric (Palma de Mallorca, 1991), the Círculo de Bellas Artes (Madrid,1997), Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Buenos Aires, 1998) and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (Barcelona, 2000) as well as the Fundación Telefónica (Madrid, 2003).
