Es Baluard presents the first retrospective exhibition of the work of Rafel Joan (Palma de Mallorca, 1957), an artist who had his first solo exhibition in the Galeria 4 Gats of Palma in 1983, and whose career embraces more than three decades.
Although in the first years it is possible to understand his work within the context of Neo-expressionism and what is known as return to figuration, two trends controled in the 80s in a large part of the world, from the United States and Mexico to Germany and Italy, his style was soon depurated in the search of a meditation essentiality which has little to do with Expressionism, and the theme of his work is focused in the last years, almost in an exclusive manner, on the surrounding landscapes.
Rafel Joan lives nowadays in Vilafranca de Bonany (Mallorca).
