Organisation

Inaugurated on January 30, 2004, Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma is an institution dedicated to modern and contemporary art. A space for reflecting on the present, open to dialogue between creation, memory, and territory.
Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma holds a significant collection of contemporary art and a track record of exhibitions and activities that have promoted knowledge, the dissemination of heritage, and the advancement of art and culture in general—and of the Balearic archipelago in particular. Through inclusive programming and a commitment to the social values of art, Es Baluard is more than a museum: alongside its dual role as a museum and art center, it serves as the leading hub for contemporary culture in the Balearic Islands.
Inaugurated on January 30, 2004, by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain, Es Baluard Museu has presented exhibitions by artists such as Rebecca Horn (2004), Fabrizio Plessi (2004), Picasso (2006), Jaume Plensa (2006), Andy Warhol (2006), Joan Miró (2006, 2008, 2025), Santiago Rusiñol (2007), Anselm Kiefer (2009), Robert Mapplethorpe (2009), Joana Vasconcelos (2009), Juan Uslé (2010), Alberto García-Alix (2010), Eduardo Arroyo (2011), Christian Boltanski (2011), Amparo Sard (2014), Thomas Hirschhorn (2016), Bernardí Roig (2019), Teresa Margolles (2020), Martha Rosler (2020), Pedro G. Romero (2023), Ana Laura Aláez (2024), Carlos Garaicoa (2024), Eugenio Dittborn (2025), and Jessica Stockholder (2025).
The museum is managed by the Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma Foundation, composed of the Government of the Balearic Islands, the Consell de Mallorca, the Palma City Council, and the Fundació d’Art Serra. In 2008, the Acquisitions Committee was established, comprising internal and external experts, with the aim of expanding the collection. The museum’s holdings currently include more than 800 works, originating from the donation and deposit of artworks by the Fundació d’Art Serra and its founding president, Pere A. Serra Bauzá, as well as works deposited by the Palma City Council, the Consell de Mallorca, and the Government of the Balearic Islands, along with subsequent acquisitions, donations, and deposits from artists, collectors, and other institutions.
Thus, the collection of the Es Baluard Museu Foundation includes works by artists associated with the most significant international artistic movements since the late 19th century—such as Joaquín Sorolla, Joaquim Mir, Pilar Montaner de Sureda, María Blanchard, Fernand Léger, Norah Borges, Picasso, Joan Miró, Jorge Oteiza, Antoni Tàpies, Robert Motherwell, Rebecca Horn, Fabrizio Plessi, Joan Brossa, Antonio Saura, Miquel Barceló, Wolf Vostell, Marina Abramović, Richard Long, Jaume Plensa, Ferran García Sevilla, Antoni Muntadas, Luis Gordillo, Helena Almeida, Concha Jerez, Juan Uslé, Perejaume, Peter Halley, Miriam Cahn, Helmut Dorner, Jonathan Lasker, Shirin Neshat, Fiona Rae, Thomas Ruff, Shinique Smith, Eulàlia Valldosera, Tomás Saraceno, Antoni Socías, Susy Gómez, Bernardí Roig, and Angela de la Cruz.
