Es Baluard Museu presents a talk in which the German artist Axel Hütte—one of the most internationally renowned photographers and a leading figure of the Düsseldorf School—will discuss his artistic career, addressing his working processes and his relationship with nature through his images. The experience of travel plays a fundamental role in his work. His early series of European landscapes are pictorialist compositions, in which he observes the ideal of Romantic beauty. All his photographs are imbued with a treatment of landscape as a cultural construct.
Trained between 1973 and 1981 at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under the tutelage of Bernd and Hilla Becher, Hütte is a colleague of other photographers such as Thomas Ruff, Andreas Gursky or Candida Höfer, whose works would be included in the New German Photography.
Axel Hütte’s talk is titled Phantasmagoria and Reality. It is part of the “Registre de llum” series, which, at Es Baluard Museu, explores the theory and practice of contemporary photography through lectures, masterclasses, and workshops, as well as book and photobook presentations that reflect on current narratives generated between image and camera.
This activity is included in the programme of the first edition of Mallorca PhotoFest (PHOF) with the aim of promoting contemporary visual culture.
Axel Hütte’s talk is in English. Simultaneous translation into Spanish will be provided.
