Protocol for Activating an Essay

Conceived as a curatorial project in the form of a book El comisario lunar now opens up into a shared experience. Images, words, music, and gestures converge in a session that drifts between conversation and performance—partially scripted, yet with room for the unforeseen.
Error, improvisation, and dérive are integral to the proposal: they may interrupt what was planned, alter the rhythm, or steer things in an unexpected direction. The aim is to put the book into play and allow the encounter itself to shape the questions it raises.

You are invited to listen, to intervene, or simply to stay—to share a space and time where conversation and complicity can unfold in their own directions.
The presentation of the essay El comisario lunar features the collaboration of Elena Vallés.

Tolo Cañellas is an independent curator. His practice, which began in the early 2000s, encompasses exhibitions, performance series, and platforms that operate across institutional, independent, and gallery contexts. He has curated projects for venues such as La Casa Encendida, Casal Solleric, Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (MUSAC)—where he presented the project Fake in the context of the Frieze Art Fair—as well as for galleries including Horrach Moyà, Fran Reus, and Pelaires, where he has worked with artists such as Terence Koh, Pepo Salazar, and the collective AVPD, respectively. Recent projects include Club Miseria. The Last Beat by Bel Fullana (Casal Solleric, Palma, 2026), Adimensional Echoes by Joan Bonnemaison (XF Proyectos, Madrid, 2025), Der letzte Blick zurück vor dem Abgrund by Pere Butza (TACA, Palma, 2025), Music as a Foreign Language (2023)—developed alongside Jeremy Deller—and the performance series [Comfort (Voyeur) Control] (2021). Previous projects such as Microinjertos (bypass) (2017) and ¿Para qué sirven las canciones? (2020)—the latter in collaboration with Carles Congost—establish a body of work focused on activating the exhibition context. Currently, he is developing the Hidden Track series for LA BIBI and curating the exhibitions E-Conmotion by Cristina Lucas (at the Museu Tàpies) and Una ausencia editada by Nacho Martín Silva (for Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma).

He has spearheaded platforms such as The Black Pillar, Box 27, and Glory Hall, which are dedicated to producing and showcasing artistic practices that exist outside of conventional formats—featuring artists like Nauzet Mayor, Andrés Senra, Sandra Gamarra, and Elena Alonso—while also fostering programs for training, mentorship, and curatorial experimentation. His writing, characterized by an essayistic and critical-narrative approach, serves as an extension of his curatorial practice. He has contributed to various media outlets and authored texts for artists including Bel Fullana, Carmela García, Albert Pinya, and Adrián Martínez Marí.
