The Llata Workshop: The Legacy of Ses Madones de Capdepera is an initiative of Biennal B, promoted by Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma and the Consell de Mallorca, in collaboration with Ajuntament de Capdepera and SUELO Mallorca.
Llata is the generic name given in Capdepera, and in some places in Mallorca, to traditional basketry made with palm leaves. This iconic basketry, which resonates with ancestral practices across the globe, combines the care of the island’s only native palm, the garballó in Catalan language or palmito, in Spanish, with a rich artisanal heritage.
In this workshop, offered through the Biennal B program, we will discuss Ses Madones de sa llata and delve into the roots of this craft. We will learn about the processes, from harvesting the palmito leaves to the different steps in basket making. Seated in a circle of chairs, emulating Ses Madones, participants will learn to prepare the leaves and make llata, the braiding that gives this craft its name and is the foundation of every basket. Through our hands, in contact with this craft, and within the circle, we will be transported to another time and another rhythm, reconnecting with the human capacity to create and build together as a community.
The session will be led by the expert hands of Araceli Iranzo and Antonella Farris, from La Escuela Artesana and Antic Mallorca, respectively. La Escuela Artesana has received the Mallorca Artisan Promotion Award, granted by the Consell de Mallorca. Antic Mallorca has been selected to be part of the Consell de Mallorca’s artisan fashion guarantee brand. It is also included in the Spain Artisan Guide and the Homo Faber European Crafts Guide.
