The submission, anxiety, repression and solitude that affect us in our daily life, and the desire to flee towards a state of permanent happiness and create our own artificial paradise is what Núria Marquès sets out before us in this series of pieces made between 2007 and 2010. States of mental fragility in a society that moves forward at a frenetic pace, emotional disorders which alter our capacity to cope with everyday life and are dealt with in these drawings in diverse formats and short animations. Conceived as fables, they respond to that emotional state of instability, they are unfair stories featuring a series of invented characters who live in an unreal world like a cathartic process.

Artist biography
Núria Marquès
Ciudadela, Menorca, 1975

A graduate in Fine Arts from the Universitat de Barcelona, Nuria Marquès lives and works in Barcelona. A multidisciplinary artist, she develops her work using photography, drawing, sculpture and video. Her discourse, which centres on the inner self, deals with the psychological pressures we are subjected to every day and the desire to escape to a permanent state of happiness and create our own permanent artificial paradise. Anxiety, fear and repression are recurrent terms in her investigation, conceived as the reflex of a society that is too demanding and frenzied and which leads people to extreme situations of mental chaos.

In her most recent work, as well as continuing to explore the possibilities of photography, she develops a series of drawings, the fruit of a personal introspection, which she executes through an invented character who ends up being the subject of an animated short film: Once upon a time, a story she created for the Turku Biennial, Finland (2007), and a reference point for her subsequent artistic production.

In spite of her youth, she has been recognised with different prizes, such as the Art Jove’04 prize awarded by the Govern de les Illes Balears, an honourable mention in the 4th Festival d’Images Artístiques Vidéo at the Centre culturel français, Milan (2004), the Beca Auditòrium Sa Màniga-Fundació “Sa Nostra”, Palma and an honourable mention in the Premis Ciutat de Palma, Ajuntament de Palma (2005). Her work has been exhibited in museums and art centres like the Museo de Arte Contemporánea in Vigo (2003), Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (2003-2004), Centre de Cultura “Sa Nostra” de Palma, Sala de Cultura “Sa Nostra” in Ciudadela, Mahón and Ibiza (2005), Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid (2006), Centre d’Art Santa Mònica in Barcelona (2006) and the Mori Art Museum of Tokyo (2006).
